Nøstepinde is
Norwegian for "Nest Stick." It is an old and clever design used
for winding a center-pull ball of yarn. You hold the
"handle" end, tie your yarn around the waist, and begin winding
around the tapered end. When your hank is gone, you have a nice ball
of yarn on the end of your nøstepinde ("nosti" for
short). Untie the first end from the waist of the nosti and slip it off
the tapered end. Voila! You have a center-pull ball of yarn. With
practice, you can make square-shouldered balls of yarn which will
stack nicely.
Nosti are useful and handy
to have around for all yarn crafts. They are also much more easily
portable than a table-clamp ball winder. Just slip it into your craft bag
and away you go.
When used in conjunction
with a swift, a nosti is a real time saver. Instead of winding around your
hand, literally tying you to the yarn, you wind around the nosti, which
can be set down if the phone rings or a child requires attention.
Your Dragonfly Turnings
nosti is more than just a tool. It is a beautiful piece of wood which will
age to a nice patina and can be passed to the next generation of crafters.
We handcraft each nosti individually from fine quality hardwood, then
sand, wax, and polish each to a fine finish. Because each is individually
turned, no two are identical. Own yours today!
